Mechanisms of regulation of proteostasis in peripheral tissues by the nervous system:
Using the nematode C. elegans, we are investigating the Unfolded Protein Response of the Endoplasmic Reticulum (UPRER) pathway through genetic screenings. Our focus is in undertanding the mechanisms of how neuronal and glial cells modulate the UPRER activation in peripheral tissues. Recently, we discovered that the olfactory perception of pathogenic bacteria can activate a neuronal non-autonomous pathway associated with the UPRER, promoting the lifespan of C. elegans (De-Souza et al., Nature Aging, 2023).
